AI Upskilling Workshop (online) : “Human-centered AI for Academics”

Invitation : 19 November 2026 at 17:00 CET

Are you a lecturer exploring how AI and machine translation tools can enhance academic teaching? The EMERGE Alliance invites you to take part in a free online upskilling workshop.

AI is rapidly becoming part of everyday academic work, but the technology is developing faster than many users can realistically keep up with. What do academics need to know about large language models, chatbots, and other AI applications? Which tools are useful for which tasks, and what risks and limitations need to be considered?

Centered on practical AI literacy, this two-hour workshop offers a concise introduction to current AI technologies and applications that are reshaping academic teaching and research. It combines critical orientation, group exchange, and hands-on work in three thematic areas.

Participants will also receive follow-up materials for further exploration.

Topics

  • Key concepts and the current technological landscape
  • Ethical and societal issues: bias in AI systems, the digital divide, environmental impact, and mitigation strategies
  • Data protection and data security: tool security vs. process security, protected data types, and practical safeguards
  • Best practices and emerging trends in AI-assisted translation & text editing

Practical activities

  • Building and using a customized chatbot
  • Exploring different tools and methods for AI-assisted translation & text editing

Workshop instructors

Dr. Maria Palomares is Assistant Professor at the University of Limerick, where her research focuses on educational technology, artificial intelligence in education, AI literacy and digital competence, and the use of AI applications in language learning and teaching.
